My 2024 reading goals – a closer look
This year I’m going to attempt to read widely by using the 5×5 reading challenge put out by the Schole Sisters. You choose 5 categories and read 5 books in each category over the year. My categories are: American Lit, Theology, Brain & Habits, Barb Raveling books, & “For Sarah.”
American Lit~
I’m going to be teaching American Lit this year and between the syllabus (400+ pages) and the books, I’ll be very busy reading!
Theology~
One THICK book and 4 thin books will fill this category.
A Pastor’s Sketches
Select Letters of John Newton
Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton (My first book by him!)
The Doctrine of Repentance by Thomas Watson
The Man Christ Jesus
Brain and Habits~
I’ve read Getting Things Done before, but have slacked off, so that’s my first read this year to help me keep on top of all my other goals.
How to Read Slowly
We Are All Philosophers
Digital Rehab (If you haven’t seen his videos, watch these first! Video 1 and Video 2.)
Atomic Habits
Getting Things Done
Barb Raveling Books~
I have 5 books from Barb Raveling to help with weight loss and just renewing my mind in general. I’ve gone through two before, but will go through those again and finish the new ones. She is so practical and helpful. You can find all of her books here or visit her website for all kinds of great information on renewing your mind here.
For Sarah~
I only have three in this category so far, so I have room for two more. This is a special category of books I want to give to my sweet daughter-in-law. I read them first, underline, highlight, and add notes to them and then give them to her to do the same. Maybe someday she’ll pass them along to her daughter.
Expect Something Beautiful
Let Me Be a Woman
For the Family’s Sake
So that’s my 5×5 Reading Challenge this year. I’ll keep you updated monthly with how I’m progressing. I’m hoping to continue my Reading Notebook as I go and will share that also. What are you reading? I’d love to hear below!
woot! I took have a 5×5 plan. I plan to take the year to read The Great Tradition and Dante’s trilogy, both their own category. then it’s “the art and science of being a woman”, “classics from my shelves” and “book clubs”. I’m trying to push myself, but then I’m already behind with GT and Dante. blah.
Thanks for the 5×5 plan, already have checked items off. How do you find time to read? I have made a tracker for days reading and it is not helping.
The 5×5 reading challenge has intrigued me since you mentioned it in the last blog post. I think this will help me keep track of my reading better also & challenge me to mix things up. At the end of the year I start thinking “What books did I read? What books did I finish? Did I finish ANY books!?!” Thanks for posting your suggestions. Atomic Habits has been brought to my attention a few times in the last month, so that one is getting added for sure. Thanks for all your posts. Your blog is one of the few that I follow faithfully.
My mom got each of the granddaughters/inlaw Sally Clarkson’s Own Your Life. You may want to consider that or another Sally Clarkson book in your For Sarah category.
Kari, All the reading you do you also watch tv or get on www? I would love to read more and I guess it must be a matter of choice. My hubby watches tv all the time and if I want to spend time with him it has to be in front of the tv. I feel so isolated with I go to my study and just read. Hubby does read to me from time to time and I just love it. TV is such a waste but can’t break away from it. you have any hint?, it would be so appreciated, blessings Patty
